Shilotma (Shila) Batenburg

I completed my undergraduate Law degree at the University of Auckland, New Zealand in November 1982 and was conferred with a Bachelor of Laws degree in May 1983 at which time I also commenced a post graduate Professional Law course at the University of Auckland.  I then took a short break and completed the final subject in 1986.Shila1-2.jpg

My professional law admissions are:

  • April 1987 – Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.
  • June 1987 – Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.
  • July 1987 – Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
  • December 1987 – Practitioner of the High Court of Australia.

I became a member of the Queensland Law Society in July 1987. I received my pin for 25 years of service as QLS member in 2012.  I undertook the Family Law Specialist Accreditation Exams in 1996 when the course became first available in Queensland having practiced almost exclusively in Family Law matters since 1987. I became an Accredited Family Law Specialist in 1996.

Over the years I have undertaken several courses and training including in Mediation (as a mediator) and Collaborative Practice in Law, and Independent Children’s Lawyer as well as running a busy sole owner Law Practice.

I have worked as an Independent (Separate) Children’s Lawyer in complex Family Law parenting matters since 1987, where due to a number of special reasons, a court makes an Order that the children in those matters have an Independent Lawyer be appointed for them, to assist the court in determining what is in the best interests of the children. The role is one of significant responsibility, and whilst it is funded by Legal Aid I consider the role to be one also of privilege to undertake and part of my service to the community at large.

With my extensive experience and knowledge, I work in all aspects of family law matters and offer my clients a balanced, practical and cost effective approach having developed a deep understanding of my clients’ problems and their needs and the dynamics involved in their particular and individual circumstances and relationships.

I like to look at the big picture and focus on negotiating and achieving the best and practical settlement outcomes for my clients, where possible without the need to commence court proceedings through mediation, collaboration and the use of other alternative dispute resolution services. However I am also skilled in litigation where court intervention is necessary. I am dedicated to performing my job with professionalism and compassion and sensitivity.

In addition, I assist my clients with Wills and Deceased Estates and Enduring Power of Attorneys and any associated matters as they arise.

I am a member of the Family Law Practitioners Association and the North Brisbane Chamber of Commerce and Child Protection Practitioners Association of Queensland Ltd.. I also undertake further community work as a volunteer Lawyer presently with Women’s Legal Service and the Nundah Community Legal Service.  In the past I have also been volunteer Lawyer with the South Brisbane Community Legal Service at West End and Pine Rivers Community Legal Service at Strathpine.

I am also a past committee member of the Family Law Practitioners Association, South Brisbane Community Legal Service, Collaborative Practitioners Association of Queensland, South Brisbane Community Legal Service and Nundah Community Legal Service.

In my spare time, away from the office I enjoy catching up with family and friends and taking cooking classes, walking, travelling and trekking (not star).   In recent past years, I have completed the challenges of the Milford and the Grand Traverse Treks both in the South Island of New Zealand, parts of the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory, the Great Ocean Walk in Victoria, parts of the Freycinet National Park in Tasmania, and the hidden hinterland of the Amalfi Coast in Italy. I am looking forward to my next challenge of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrims Walk in Japan.

I have also sponsored two children through World Vision for the past 11 years.
